Silver Park Design Competition
Winners Announced

Are you a timber framer or log builder or designer interested in creating a park shelter that will be enjoyed by Montanans for years to come? If so, we want you! You could win $500.

We are very pleased to announce the Silver Park Design Competition, a contest to create three small log and/or timber shelters, with benches, in Silver Park, Missoula, Montana. The Design Competition is offering awards of $500 each to the three entries selected for construction. Formerly a mill site and originally owned by Morris Silver in the 1930s and then by the F. Morris & Helen Silver Foundation, Silver Park will be a 15-acre public space owned by the city of Missoula. Situated along the river across from downtown Missoula, it connects to and extends Missoula's river trail system. The park's theme celebrates the heritage of timber in Western Montana.

Design Objectives

The objectives of the design competition are:

  • to produce a creative and workable design for Silver Park in keeping with the park theme

  • to provide recognition for timber frame and log design in general

  • to provide recognition for the winning designs within the TFG, ILBA and Missoula communities

This competition is a partnership of the Missoula Redevelopment Agency (MRA), the Timber Framers Guild, and the International Log Builders' Association (ILBA).

Eligibility

The Silver Park Design Competition is open to everyone, and designs may be submitted by individuals or by teams. The deadline for submissions of all designs is November 15, 2007. Each design will be judged on the following criteria: overall aesthetic design, creative use of materials, originality and how well they meet the design parameters listed in the Silver Park Design Competition Information Document (downloadable in PDF format). Judging will be conducted anonymously.

Note that one log and two timber frame structures will be selected for construction.

Design competition winners will be announced in December 2007. The three winning designs will be built at an ILBA pre-conference workshop in Whitefish, Montana, and at a TFG-sponsored workshop in Missoula in April 2008. These structures will be erected along the Clark Fork River Trail in Silver Park at the conclusion of the Missoula workshop.

Although there is no financial award for contest winners, the award-winning designs will receive recognition in several ways: They will be published in the Timber Framers Guild and ILBA newsletters as well as on their websites. The winning designs may also be published in the form of a design monograph. In addition, there will be public recognition given to the design competition winners at both organizations' conferences to be held in April 2008.
