Course Description
This course will utilize classroom exercises and demonstrations to develop the skills required to design a timber frame and to decide what joints (connections) work best in different situations. We'll examine how the frame design dovetails with overall house design; principles of frame and joint design; structural engineering: strength of materials, the nature of wood, truss analysis, loads and reactions, beam sizes, raising criteria and peg layout.

Students will learn to make and read shop drawings and construct frame models. This course is ideal for those wishing to adapt a conventional plan to a timber frame (bring it with you if you have one); it is also appropriate for professional joiners on the shop floor who must often execute joinery.
