Ramsey Park Ramada
Eagar, Arizona
June 11-16, 2007
The Timber Framers Guild and volunteers will help the small town of Eagar, Arizona, renovate their community park and, in the process, teach some timber framing principles. Sponsored by the Northern Arizona Wood Products Association (NAWPA), the project involves assembly and raising a 24' x 24' timber frame ramada. A ramada is a structure built of posts and beams that provides shelter from the elements; it is often covered to provide storage.
This project is the culmination of a three-phased approach. Phases 1 and 2 involve layout and cutting workshops that will be manned by local prison inmates in a building vocational program and will have only limited enrollment to the public for a fee (see the NAWPA site). Phase 3 is open to the public June 11-16, and is the phase that the Timber Framers Guild is seeking volunteers.
Three-Phased Approach
The Phase 1 workshop, scheduled for
April 30-May 5, is a Basic Timber Framing Techniques workshop for prison inmates who are part of a building vocational program offered through Northland Pioneer College and the Department of Corrections. Since the inmates work only a four-day week, NAWPA will have local contractors come to the workshop on May 4th and 5th.
Phase 2 starts May 6th and goes through June 11th. Again the prison inmates will cut the frame based on the training they received in Phase 1.
Phase 3 is the Frame Assembly and Raising Rendezvous; it starts June 11th and ends with the raising on June 16th. All volunteers (experts and novices alike) are welcome to attend the raising. There will be no fee, but you will need to register in advance if you want to actively participate. Participants should bring a tool kit.
Chris Gunn is the TFG Project Leader, and will provide both project management and instruction.
