The Timber Framers Guild will host a five-day workshop to build one of the three winning timber and log designs in the Silver Park Design Competition. The Bonin design, shown at right, will give participants an excellent opportunity for honing their skills in compound joinery. In addition, this shelter, plus the other two winning designs that are being cut at local shops, will be raised in their eventual home in Silver Park, which is adjacent to Osprey Stadium where the workshop will be held. The Silver Park Design Competition was a contest to create three small log and/or timber shelters, with benches, in Missoula's Silver Park. Formerly a mill site, Silver Park is a 14.5-acre public space situated along the Clark River across from downtown Missoula. Registration & Workshop Fee There is no fee for this workshop, which includes meals and campsite, but we do ask that you register in advance. Deadline for registration: Sept. 8.
If you choose to participate, you have a choice of staying in the home of a Missoula family, camping at Osprey Stadium, or bringing your own RV. RV camping is available at Osprey Stadium for self-contained units only; there are no water hook-ups or dumping facilities. For those camping at Osprey, no tent stakes are allowed. (People might have alternative way to hold tents down other than a rock.) Local Missoula organizations will provide three meals per day, starting with breakfast on September 22 and ending on September 26 with dinner following the raising. We encourage folks to come by and ask questions. Access to the work areas will be limited to those who have been through the registration process. A few spots are being held for local volunteers, and we encourage their skills and interests with a member of the Leadership Team on site. We will do our best, though we cannot promise, to find meaningful work for you. Workshop GoalsDuring the workshop, participants will have a chance to learn:
The leadership team will consist of these instructors: Curtis Milton, Alicia Hammarlund, and Rocco Bellebuono, Isaac McCoy-Sulentic, and Dave Kaplan. Overseeing it all will be Joel McCarty, TFG Co-Executive Director, Projects. |

Thanks to ...Our host for the workshop is Home Resource, a non-profit organization that collects and sells re-usable building materials to reduce waste, help build healthier communities, and promote a more vibrant and sustainable local economy. Their website: www.homeresource.orgLocal TFG member Jennifer Anthony of Fearless Engineers has worked tirelessly with the Missoula community to generate interest in the project and has also donated her engineering time. She obtained funding from MRA to secure materials salvaged from an old mill site as well as sinker logs salvaged upstream at the Blackfoot River, to be used for this project. She is joined in her efforts by Missoula resident Geoff Badenoch. Local Missoula timber framers Caleb Larson and Mark Gantt have also volunteered their time and expertise to organize the pre-cutting of some of the frame pieces. Missoula volunteer groups and community organizations are organizing host families to provide lodging and food for project participants. The Missoula Downtown Association is organizing meal donations for the participants through Colleen Rudio. Contact her at (406) 542-8155 or crudio@jccscpa.com if you would like to contribute. Susie Orr is coordinating housing for participants. She can be reached at (406) 327-9721 or SusieOrr@bresnan.net. Our thanks to all. |
The workshop will be held on site at Missoula's Osprey Stadium, beginning Sunday, September 21, with the arrival of the leadership team and workshop participants. Workshop training will start on Monday at 8 a.m. and continue through the raisings of the three structures, which are planned for Friday, September 26. Participants may depart on Saturday or on Sunday.
Participants should bring a tool kit. The Guild will supply a recommended list of tools for participants to bring.
