Join members of the Guild and local volunteers in the beautiful Ozarks for an introduction to timber framing.

For this Rendezvous, we will build a timber frame structure for the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. It will be the first structure to be erected within the Botanical Gardens, and the folks at the Garden argued in favor of this heavy timber design approach for the Garden's first building because its architectural quality and character will set the stage for all buildings that will follow.

Elevation model

The proposed new structure will use timber beams and columns sawn from logs donated to BGO by Sweetser Properties and Construction and other sources. Included in the building will be covered bays for heavy tractor and maintenance equipment, a small office and restroom, mechanical space and locked storage for hardware and supplies.

This event is structured as a combination Workshop and Rendezvous. You may participate in one of two ways: you may enroll the first week (Nov. 9-15) in a formal, hands-on Introduction to Timber Framing workshop. The cost is $500. During the second week (Nov. 15-22), you may participate in a more informal Guild Rendezvous, when professionals and enthusiastic volunteers come together for a community service building project. Admission to the second week, the Rendezvous, is either by resumé submitted to Joel, or by payment of a modest tuition fee of $150.

BGO has more than 400 members who contribute annually to the Garden fund and provide volunteers for garden maintenance and public events. Some of those volunteers will join with members of the Timber Framers Guild to erect the frame within a week's time. The Mission of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks is "to be a source of knowledge and inspiration that will heighten people's understanding and appreciation of plants, and further preservation and enhancement efforts of the natural world."

community service and good work with great people ...
Participation Requirements

Workshop Participant: November 9-15, inclusive $500 includes all meals (except Sunday). Workshop participants (during the first week only) will receive hands-on instruction by timber frame professionals.

Rendezvous Participant: November 15-22
We are looking for enthusiastic individuals of all skill levels.
There are 3 levels of participation in the Rendezvous

  • Pro - upon acceptance of resumé, no charge but professional timber framers will need to bring their own tools.
  • Rookie - $150 to to offset instruction and supervision costs

  • Full-Time Student - upon acceptance of resumé, no charge

Your resumé can be as simple as a summary of relevant (if any) experience. We are committed to the idea of mixing the skill levels in order to further spread the timber frame virus, so don't hesitate to apply, even if your timber framing portfolio is thin. Professional timber framers are also expected to supply a modest resume, so that we'll know where you fit in.

While there is lots of work, your contributions will be well appreciated. You will be well fed, housed, and you will have meaningful work, whatever your skill or experience level.

Please make sure that your health insurance is up to date, and that you have rugged clothes and boots, ear, eye, and head protection. A modest tool list and maps will be sent to all registrants.

The Guild is pleased to be able to offer an event in another part of the country this fall. Guild rendezvous are designed to make timber framing community service events accessible to people who are willing to trade labor for learning in that time-honored tradition.
